The Colaiste Muire Mission Statement

Colaiste Muire is a Catholic co-educational school which seeks to reflect the vision of Catherine Mc Auley and Edmund Ignatius Rice founders or the Mercy Sisters and the Presentation Brothers. Both founders saw education as a means or giving meaning and enrichment to life. Our school is a Christian community or students, staff, parents, chaplaincy and management who work together towards the common goal or preparing young people for living life to the full, as committed Christians, as concerned and loving people and as responsible members of society. We are a faith community. We believe in the intrinsic value of a broad education. Our school recognises that each person is unique and has different gifts and needs. The school exists to co-operate with parents and the community to provide education for young people in our area.

The School Day

The Curriculum is designed to meet the academic, social and personal needs of every student. All First Years study eleven examination subjects which they take up to Junior Certificate – eight core subjects and three choice subjects. All students must take one Modern European Language. There are 9 class periods each day, with 6 on Wednesdays. There is a 10-minute morning break at 10.50 and 1 hour for lunch from 1.00pm to 2.00pm. Students may return home for lunch or may take it in the Dining Assembly. Teachers assess students regularly through homework (written and learning), practical assignments, observation and tests. There are mid-term assessments and school examinations at Christmas and Summer. 3rd and 6th Years have school examinations at Christmas and a full Pre-Examination in February/March. Reports are posted home to parents/guardians twice a year following these tests. Students are prepared for the Junior and Leaving Certificate. Students also have the option of doing the Transition Year and Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme. A Parent/Teacher meeting is held for all year groups each year. Subject teachers attend to give feedback and advice. Special appointments may be made with teachers via the school office (4813800) throughout the school year. There is a Parents’ Room set aside for such individual meetings.

Consequences of not keeping School Rules

1 Students are spoken to by the teacher, encouraged to improve and to understand the effects of their behaviour on others. 2 The teacher gives a reprimand and may give additional work to complete. 3 The teacher contacts home through a note in the Student Journal. 4 If misbehaviour continues, the pupil is referred to the Class Teacher who meets the student. If there is no improvement, privileges may be: withdrawn - restriction of access to extra-curricular activities, detention during break time. 5 If there is still failure to improve the Class Teacher issues a Report Card. 6 Parents/Guardians are informed in writing when the 1st Report Card is issued. 7 Students must present their card at the start of class and return the completed card to the class teacher at the end of the week. 8 Failure to return the completed card will result in a 2nd Report Card. 9 Parents are interviewed by the Year Head and informed that suspension will be imposed following any further serious misbehaviour.
